Eq. (24) and hyperbolas

𝑠2βˆ’π‘ 1=π‘šπœ†(24)

The geometric definition

A hyperbola is the set of points whose distances to two fixed points (the foci) have a constant difference:

|𝑃𝐹2|βˆ’|𝑃𝐹1|=2𝐴.

Eq. (24) says exactly this, with

So no calculation is needed to recognize it: each bright-fringe condition is the defining property of a hyperbola with the slits as foci. Changing π‘š changes the constant, which gives a family of hyperbolas sharing the same foci.

Checking it algebraically

Following Figure 6, put the sources on the 𝑦-axis at 𝑆1,2=(0,±𝑐) with 𝑐=π‘Ž/2, and let 𝑑=π‘šπœ†:

𝑠12=π‘₯2+(π‘¦βˆ’π‘)2,𝑠22=π‘₯2+(𝑦+𝑐)2.

Subtracting, 𝑠22βˆ’π‘ 12=4𝑐𝑦. Since 𝑠2βˆ’π‘ 1=𝑑,

𝑠2+𝑠1=𝑠22βˆ’π‘ 12𝑠2βˆ’π‘ 1=4𝑐𝑦𝑑.

Adding and subtracting these two relations,

𝑠1=2π‘π‘¦π‘‘βˆ’π‘‘2.

Square it and set equal to π‘₯2+(π‘¦βˆ’π‘)2:

π‘₯2+𝑦2βˆ’2𝑐𝑦+𝑐2=4𝑐2𝑦2𝑑2βˆ’2𝑐𝑦+𝑑24.

The βˆ’2𝑐𝑦 terms cancel. Collect terms:

𝑦24𝑐2𝑑2βˆ’π‘¦2βˆ’π‘₯2=𝑐2βˆ’π‘‘24⇒𝑦2𝑑2/4βˆ’π‘₯2𝑐2βˆ’π‘‘2/4=1.

Substituting back 𝑑=π‘šπœ†, 𝑐=π‘Ž/2: 𝑦2(π‘šπœ†/2)2βˆ’π‘₯2(π‘Ž/2)2βˆ’(π‘šπœ†/2)2=1

This is the standard hyperbola 𝑦2/𝐴2βˆ’π‘₯2/𝐡2=1 with

𝐴=|π‘š|πœ†2,𝐡2=𝑐2βˆ’π΄2=π‘Ž2βˆ’π‘š2πœ†24,𝑐=π‘Ž2 (focal distance).
